Mathématiques congolaises

by In Koli Jean Bofane

Published by Actes Sud

In a very troubled Kinshasa, Célio could have continued his sorry journey longer still, if it hadn´t been for his encounter with the director of an office whose activities were very confidential, linked to the Presidency of the Republic. The hunger was enough of an incentive to render the debate over good and evil irrelevant. Nothing is for free in this town, the young man knows this, and he takes there the occasion to join the elite circle of modern sorcerers who manipulate beings and everyday life.more

A contemporary writer nearing his fifties meets a young woman while promoting his book. The emotions she stirs up take him back to the 20 year-old man he once was, back to a time when he was a teacher by day and poet by night. A time when he lived in a bedsit with the “Old-Timers”, three men past their prime who had decided to spend the last moments of their lives alone, in that non-descript Port-aux-Princes bedsit. more

Mes quatre femmes

by Gisèle Pineau

Published by Philippe Rey

Four women from the same island, with the same blood, are summoned by the author´s memory. Each in turn retraces the story of her life, returning to the sufferings caused by man and history alike, as well as the joys, both great and small, experienced. Each in her own way embodies part of Guadeloupe´s history over the past two centuries. From the abolition of slavery to a sense of exile in the city, this novel brings together the unique fates of four women searching for their freedom. more

The narrative centres on two lovers, Marie and Steph. She is a photographer, he is an archaeologist. Theirs is an on-off relationship, familiar to modern couples everywhere when both partners have demanding careers. They live on opposite sides of a nameless city divided and devastated by war. After a long separation, Steph has written Marie a letter (the telephone system is no longer operational) saying he loves her and is ready to commit to the relationship and wants to be with her always. He asks her, if this is what she wants too, to come and meet him at the bridge on a given day at a given time. He promises to wait for exactly one hour, and if she doesn´t come, he´ll know that she does not want to continue the relationship and he will respect her wishes; that will be the last Marie will hear from him.
